Olivia worked both her corporate job and home based business until she could quit her J-O-B.  Hurray Olivia!

Home Based Business – Time Management

February 8, 2009

When flying solo in your own business, time management is key.

Yes, setting aside blocks of time to complete tasks is important.

The ability to focus, work diligently, without diversion or distraction until the task is done is critical.

How many of you find yourself doing this?  Starting, stopping,  set it down, mull it over, pick it up, start again, etc.

For myself personally, this is bad habit that is a time killer.  All of these starts and stops increase the amount of time is takes to get a task done.

I continually challenge myself to complete tasks from start to finish in one sitting to get that huge productivity gain.  I know for that did not leave my corporate job to exchange it with another 40 hour week.

And no, not every task can be handle this way.  Those that can will give you much relief.  A greater sense of accomplishment.  The piles will shrink at a much fast rate.

So, how do you handle time managment?  How do you avoid and eliminate the starting and stoppping?  I’m interested in hearing your strategies.

The Marketing Doctor

January 29, 2009

The successful marketer has the successful business.  Aside from knowing how to put words on paper, you need to know which words to put on paper.  To convey the message that will touch your customers and motivate them to action.

To convey the message, understand the desire of your customer.  This is also known as getting into the conversation in their minds.

The best way to do this:  ask questions.  The easiest way to do this is ask  thru a survey.  Prepare the questions, ask them in the proper order, with proper detail.  Think of yourself as a doctor examining a patient.  Asking the right questions, retrieves key pieces of information that tells you their condition, their situation, what is their most burning problem.

With this information, analyze or diagnose the customer needs.  What are they asking for help with?  What needs are unmet?

The solution or perscription is the answer to that unmet need.  Your product or service that is the answer to all their concerns and questions.  Your product or service is the cure for their ills.

Marketing Lesson 101

January 28, 2009
My husband and I love the food at this local historic hotel.  All their recipes are homemade!  Below is an email I received.  To help  everyone to become marketing savvy, I have provided a critque below.
  • From Field:  Excellent.  I know exactly who this is from.
  • Subject Line:  Need a more enticing headline.  Especially, since I already know who the email is from.  Peronalization is helpful also.  A suggestion:  Jackie, Have you heard?  (With that one question, I am thinking “heard what?”  Now I want to open the email to find out).
  • Body:  All caps is difficult to read.  Some readers may interpret this as shouting.  Suggestions for improvement:
  1. Use upper and lower case to soften the email and make is easier to read
  2. Make the email interesting and personal by placing a picture of the staff or hotel
  3. Link to yahoo maps and include the address (this is handy if the email is forwarded to another person not from the area)
  • Miscellaneous:
  1. Mention menu specials or attach a copy of the menu.  Their food is fabulous, they really need to play this up.
  2. Since the hotel has been in business for 140 years, include a fun fact about its history.
  3. Or have a history contest, sending a weekly multiple choice question.  With the winner receiving a free dinner.
